El conde Lucanor I

Find out what stories went verbally from person to person in the 14th century in Spain.

Do you know the story of The Milkmaid? Surely, in your country there is a similar one.

It is the story of a lady who is going to sell a jug of milk to the market. Along the way, she thinks that with the money from the sale of milk she will invest in other businesses and she will become very rich.

But during the trip, her pitcher falls and breaks, and she has to say goodbye to all her dreams.

This tale has given rise to a popular expression that is used when someone is unrealistic and dreams of something impossible:

“That’s like the story of the milkmaid”.

There are many versions of this tale: the oldest came from the Greek writer Aesop, but over the years, other authors have written their own version.

One of them was Don Juan Manuel. He named it Doña Truhana, and he wrote many other popular well known tales, and he orally passed from father to son, as very few people knew how to read and write back then.

With all these stories he wrote a book called El conde Lucanor, the first collection of stories signed by an author in Spanish language.

In them, the protagonist, Lucanor, asks for advice from Patronio, his adviser, about something that is worring him. Patronio, them, tells Lucanor a story as an example.

And now, you have a selection of 6 of this stories adapted to the A2 level of Spanish to enjoy and learn about the stories that grandparents would have told their own grandchildren.

El conde Lucanor, pearls of wisdom in story form.
