El licenciado Vidriera

Miguel de Cervantes portrays the Spanish society of his time sparing no one.

His intelligent gaze looks through all corners of a corrupt society.

Because in El licenciado Vidriera, Cervantes takes out the magnifying glass to portray the ills of the society in which he lived.

What does it tell us?

Licenciado Vidriera narrates the life of Tomás Rodaja, who goes to the University of Salamanca to study there. He graduates in law and later, he travels in various cities in Italy as a soldier.

When he returns to Spain, he goes crazy because of a love potion that a lady has secretly given him, and he thinks his body is made of glass and is very fragile, so he becomes obsessed with the fact that he can break into a thousand pieces.

However, his wit is surprising and everyone consults him as an advisor.

In this work, you will know

  • How he criticizes the injustices and deceptions of his time in the mouth of his protagonist, a maniac who believes he is made of glass and who has the power to always tell the truth.

  • The sense of humor and irony with which he describes the Spanish middle and lower class such as teachers, booksellers, apothecaries, doctors, bankers, tailors, shoemakers, judges, maids, abandoned wives, old and new Christians, young people married to rich old men…

  • The way in which he satirizes how everyone is looking for money or fame, especially pimps and thieves, which he considers to be real social scourges. (To the nobility and the clergy he names them only in passing… to avoid censorship).

The text is the original with updated language, without archaisms or obsolete syntax, perfect for the C2 level of Spanish LE.
