El conde Lucanor II

Find out what stories went verbally from person to person in the 14th century in Spain.

Are you a self-confident person or are you too influenced by what others do or say?

The latter happened to a very smug king: some swindlers made him believe that they had made him a beautiful suit when, in reality, he was walking naked in the street in front of all his subjects, until one of them told him the truth.

This is one of the many word of mouth stories that parents would have told their children and grandchildren during the Middle Ages throughout Europe, since almost no one knew how to read or write.

It teaches us that we should not get carried away by what others say or do, but we should always trust ourselves regardless of what they think of us.

There are many versions of this story, for example, that of the Danish writer Christian Andersen in the 19th century, but even earlier, the Spanish writer Don Juan Manuel had already written his own version entitled What happened to a king with the swindlers who made a fabric, and wrote many other folk tales that people already knew.

With all these stories he wrote a book called El conde Lucanor, the first collection of stories signed by an author in Spanish language.

In them, the protagonist, Lucanor, asks for advice from Patronio, his adviser, about something that is worring him. Patronio, them, tells Lucanor a story as an example.

And now you have a selection of 7 of this stories adapted to the B1 level of Spanish to enjoy and learn about the stories that grandparents would have told their own grandchildren.

El conde Lucanor II, pearls of wisdom in the story form.
