I imagine that you have heard of Miguel de Cervantes, but did you know that he invented the modern novel?

And what is the modern novel?

Well, a narrative that imitates life and tells realistic events in which there are always conflicts between individuals and society, and that move us and make us create feelings towards the world and even towards ourselves.

This is what happens in La fuerza de la sangre, one of Miguel de Cervantes’ short novels in which he portrays the hypocrisy of the privileged classes of his time, that are neither respectable or fair, not with humble people, nor with those of the same social position.

What is La fuerza de la sangre about?

Cervantes tells us the story of a beautiful young woman, called Leocadia, who is kidnapped and raped by an unknown young gentleman. As a consequence of the her rape, the girl has a son, whom her parents then pass off as their nephew.

One day, the boy is run over by a horse, and an old gentleman takes him to his house to tend to his injuries…

What will you discover with this work?

  • How people from the upper social classes related to each other in the 17th century.
  • The vision that men of this social class had of women.
  • Cervantes’s talent to understand female psychology.
  • The great influence of the Catholic Church in the society of that time.
  • The irony with which the author questions the dominant ideology of his time.
  • The incredible realism and accuracy of the author in the description of the places where the action takes place.
